Words of Wisdom 08/15/2011 A piece of advice, from your pals at Tailgate Advice... If you feel the need to argue with someone regarding sports, know what you are talking about. Many people like to discuss sports with me. I understand this; after all I own a sports website so it is to be expected. My gripe however stems from the fact that most people do not want to know what I think, they just want an excuse to inform me of what they know. This is perfectly understandable. Trying to prove a so called expert wrong is the mission of most Americans, especially regarding politics, religion or sports. Bottom line I hear it all, mostly the conversations start off with “you are right, but…” I do not mind this; I actually enjoy it, but if you choose to argue with someone that makes a living off of a specific subject please know what you are talking about. Here is an example of a conversation I recently had with a couple of people. Jessica: “I do not agree with male athletes making more money than female athletes.” Me: “Male athletes do not always make more money, it depends on the sport.” Jessica: “I do not understand why NBA players make more money than WNBA Players.” Me: “NBA arenas typically sell out; the NBA has numerous multi-million dollar contracts with major television companies including NBC, Turner and ESPN. The NBA generates more revenue than the WNBA.” Jason: “With all due respect you are both missing the point.” Me: “What point?” Jason: “What about Japan?” Me: “Dude you just named a random country that has no bearing on this conversation!” Jason: “OK, well then what about South Korea?” ^Please don’t be that guy! Just to reiterate, I am a very approachable person. Please ask me questions or give me your opinions. Saying this, please do not attempt to prove you know more than me by blurting out random countries in hopes of stumping me. Words of Wisdom 3/01/2011
Anyone that labels Charlie Sheen a douche has a mortal brain. As Mr. Sheen stated “I’m tired of pretending like I’m not special. I’m tired of pretending like I’m not a total bitchin’ rock star from Mars… You can’t process me with a normal brain”. What Charlie so eloquently said (paraphrase) is that you cannot comprehend an alien without bleeding blue. Charlie has accomplished more in a short time then most will accomplish in a lifetime. Mr. Sheen said “I was bangin' seven-gram rocks and finishing them because that's how I roll, because I have one speed, one gear. ... I'm different. I have a different constitution, I have a different brain, I have a different heart. I got tiger blood, man. Dying's for fools, dying's for amateurs." See what I mean? Most people have not done 6 rocks in a sitting let alone seven. People are quick to judge now days. The man won an Oscar at 20 and was not even warmed up yet, he was barely trying.
The lyricist Eminem once stated “I’m bout to spit the greatest verse of all time” to this I say no you will not. Charlie speaks of tiger blood, so Mr. Mathers (the third) I believe you are a liar. You cannot spit the greatest verse while sharing the same universe as Charlie “the great” Sheen! Many people do not appreciate the excitement that Charlie brings. In the “biz” we call it the “IT factor”! Charlie encompasses all that is good in entertainment… Humor, depth, passion and of course cocaine infused tiger blood! Charlie Sheen I for one salute you, because that is how I roll!

Open your eyes. Take off the blinders, the world has so much to offer you. Try something new every day. With an open mind, a person will naturally have an open heart. Compassion only comes when you are willing to accept others for who they are. If you walk through life believing your way is the only way, you will never fully see how amazing people are. Instead of judging people due to their differences, embrace and respect how unique they are. Why judge someone’s religion, when you can learn the premise of their belief system? The God that person prays to may be no different than your God; he (or she) may just go by a different name. A church, temple and mosque look and sound different, but they are the same in that they inspire people to be better. They give followers a second chance.
Learn something new. Appreciate people’s differences. Believing your way is better than others only fulfills your own selfishness. Learning another language, reading about a religion different than yours or eating food you are not used to can only better the masses. The more you are prepared to accept others differences, the more they will accept yours. The chain of hate being spread can be transformed into a rope that binds us all as human beings. Ultimately no matter what your belief system is you understand we have a limited time on this world, so we might as well enjoy it and let others enjoy it too.

Bottom line if you eat Stouffers microwavable dinners with a 40oz, you are ghetto!
If you eat the Stouffers microwavable macaroni and cheese for lunch, you are a redneck!
9/11 Words of Wisdom
This morning when I woke to write my first ever Orion Words of Wisdom article, I did not know what I was going to write about. I figured I would give you some sports advice, and call it a day. Before I made it very far in the article I saw the date that I typed; 9/11. Today is September 11th, and I did not even realize it when I woke up this morning. Upon this realization I quickly realized that writing sports advice would not be sufficient today. The same way I woke up this morning and quickly jumped on the site to work, millions of Americans will do the same today. We as Americans are fast paced and on always on the go, and this is why we are the greatest country on earth. We sacrifice time with our friends and family to excel in our professional life, we cut time out of personal life to add a time to our hectic work schedule. Remember; Americans are not just great because we work the hardest; we are an amazing nation because we are a loving, compassionate and kindhearted nation.
It is not only the work you do at the jobsite that will characterize you, it is not the GPA you receive from school that will define you. You may or may not be a real religious person, but I would bet you believe there is a higher being and a better place awaiting us when our time is expired here on earth. All of the worldly possessions we buy here on earth will stay on earth when we are gone, but maybe I am simpleminded but I believe we will take our memories with us. Our loved ones will either be waiting for us or be meeting us up there soon. We will break bread and talk as if we had just seen each other the day before, maybe naïve but this is what I believe. So if we cannot take our possessions with us, why do we put so much importance on collecting them?
On the 11th of September 2001, thousands of Americans would not make home for dinner, they would not be able to see their kids grow up. All of their possessions would collect dust. The families that would not see their loved ones anymore only have memories and hope of seeing them in a better place. This day reminds me that life on earth is temporary; we will not be here forever.
Today reminds me that when I leave the house I need to give my wife and daughter a kiss and hug. I need to tell my family and friends that I love them. It reminds me that I cannot take possessions with me, but I can leave a legacy behind. Being remembered as a good, honest, loving husband and father is much more important than leaving a box of monetarily priceless possessions behind. Today reminds me that not every person has someone in their life that gives them a hug and kiss bye, remember that person’s day can be made better with a simple smile and “hello”. Remember Americans are not just great because we work the hardest; we are an amazing nation because we are a loving, compassionate and kindhearted nation. Please tell your friends and family that you love them, they may need to hear it more than you realize, life is short and relish the short amount of time here on earth every day.

Pick up something old and Dusty
Today people are able to read books online or on their electronic book reading device. Reading a book on a computer should be the same as reading an old dusty tore up book. The content is the same; however the experience is completely different. Reading an old dusty book that people have read before takes on a completely different experience.
Reading books is much more than reading typed words, it is the whole experience. Knowing that someone else read the book during a particular time in their life is something special that you cannot get online or on a kindle. Knowing that specific book got someone through a hard time, or changed their outlook on life is precious. Reading an old book is like sharing a story with a friend or even a complete stranger. It reminds me of the ol’ timers that swear the experience you get from listening to an old vinyl is much more special then listening to a MP3. Reading and listening are the same in that the flaws of the pages and records are like wrinkles on an aging artist. Each line tells a different story, they say wrinkles are the road map to the soul. The same could be said about books, every tear and flaw tells a story, sometimes more interesting then what the text could tell.
As great as computers are, I believe they should be used for work, and simplifying a fast paced life. Computers can schedule your day, week, month or even your year. The problem is not the computer, the issue I have is the people that forget what a computer should be used for. When it comes to catching up on old times with friends and family that needs to happen in person. While the same story can be told on Facebook, the story cannot be told the same way. You cannot see mannerisms, and the funny hand movements the person does while speaking. Telling is your friends and family that you love them on Twitter is possible, but where is the affection. Typed words cannot replace a genuine hello. An emoticon can smile, but it cannot brighten up a complete stranger’s day like a true smile. Computers and the internet are great but they cannot replace true love and affection.
